Delegate the http://www.example.net subdomain to the www servers. That way you get a more flexible/traditional NS system at the example.net level and also all the advantages of the fault tolerant method you describe. The downside is that it's difficult to alias example.net to http://www.example.net in order to catch the http://example.net/ case.
