I can now stand carpets (by alaric)
Once I lamented that I don't like carpets because I'm always trying to clean liquids out of them, while knowing that I'll never truly succeed.
Well, with a lingering smell of kitten urine in the lounge becoming a bit too much to bear, and Jean tired of being stuck in her playpen rather than being allowed to crawl free, we went out Thursday morning and splashed out on:
It's a Bissell ProHeat Pro-Tech®. And it's quite impressive. It has all sorts of attachments to do stairs and sofas and things. My favourite attachment is visible clipped to the front of the thing in the pictures; it has a swirly brush, which is driven by a turbine running from atmospheric pressure rushing into the vacuum in the suction hose. The turbine and the gears driving the brushes from it are enclosed in an entirely transparent plastic housing, so when we use it on the stairs, I'll be able to watch it all spinning about inside. Cool!
We went over the two 'trouble spots' where kittens used to make lots of messes:
...and, as is always the case with carpet cleaners, were horrified to extract three buckets of really, really, opaque mucky water from just those couple of square metres of carpet, despite them not being areas people even walk over much. I dread to think what we'll extract when we do the whole room, including the carpet by the door where muddy feet come in.
However, most importantly, the lingering smell of urine then disappeared. Hurrah!
Sadly, this isn't something we could really afford right now, so it went on the credit card... it cost two hundred pounds 🙁 We were originally going to wait for Christmas to buy it, so when people asked what boring-married-person domestic present we wanted we could say "A donation towards a carpet cleaner!", so if there's anybody who was wondering what we'd like for christmas, a cash donation towards its retrospective cost would be most welcome 🙂
People who want to get us a present but don't want to get us a boring-married-person domestic one may, of course, be interested in my Amazon Wishlist - note the options down the left to go to the Fiction and Music sections as well as the default Technical Books section! I'm hoping Sarah will set one of her own up one day, too.
And, yes, people can borrow it if they like 🙂

yeah last xmas my boring-as-good-as-married person present from my mother was a Dyson Animal. It usually costs £300 but we got it
